COST defines early career investigators (or early stage researchers, ESR) as those who are either reading for a doctorate or who had their doctorate for less than 8 years before joining the Action. Through funding for meetings and short-term scientific missions, COST Actions provide a unique opportunity for ESR to assert their independence and grow a research network. My role – as ESR Advisor – is to ensure that MP1403 makes all these tools available to its young members. I also maintain a regular ESR newsletter that spreads awareness of upcoming conferences or other events as well as any open positions that the network is aware of.
